Recently, Thailand & Fiji had a military coup. Is it possible or can the United States military stage a coup too over the U.S. government ?

no, you would have to have the joint consesus of everyone and then you would have the special ops protecting the government i.e seals, rangers,

the coups that have been taken place recently are because of insurrection in the country to begin with and the lack of freedom,

The US military certainly can if it wanted to but it is difficult to choose ONE military leader from the army, navy, or airforce who can command total loyalty. It would be against the constitution of course but then all military coups are unconstitutional and it works well too (for the coup leader): Pakistan Musharraf's still in power, Thailand's bloodless coup backed by the King, now Fiji, Indonesia (generals in the past have made billion$).

Note: most coups occur in countries where the populace has no or little access to modern arms. Still keen on a revolution?

USA is has been a democratic government over 200 years. The military is run by civilian unlike Fiji or Thailand. We do have an election every 4 years where the president have to be elected and every two years for senator and congressman. There is check and balance of power. You got to read the US constitution which has been a model for the world.

The military Legally no Ethically No

However it is written in the Constitution that the people may disolve the governement we have now.

So the governement can be overthrown by its own people and the military would have to keep the peace till the new government was in place but the people can nullify the military if it chooses when it disolves the government.

If the McDonalds Corporation outfitted every employee with a some WP explosives and an AK-47 they could stage an effective coup of the U.S. Government.

Anything is possible, if one is given to conjecture. Its more a matter of probability than possibility.

Theoretically. However, the US military has a deep respect for the US Constitution and the Will of the people. It would take a lot to convince the military to support a coup.

yes, it's called a revolution. It's happened a few times in history. once in this country it was successful, once it was not. Anyway, all it takes is some mis-guided knuckleheads in high ranking positions to place a few highly skilled people in the right places and the president and the vice president and the senate majority leader all go dead. People keep getting dead until the one that wants to be in charge is in charge. As long as the person is in the right position to place the pawns, all is fair in love and military coups.

Well, I know many believe its not possible, but if you analyze the tactics that most coups employ, similar can be employed by the US. The question is would they be able to sustain the coup and that depends on their censorship of the media and the smartness of the American people.

No! The US military is under the control of the President, the Senate, the house and the people! Less than 9 % of the US population is military!

There are more Americans at home with guns than are in the services!

Sure they could! I doubt it though as more than 1 man is involved in government's of the United States, which is a Republic, and they seem to be busy losing about the very same thing in Iraq!

Ricky you left out 1993 to 2000 Clinton sat on his hands and did nothing so we really did get attacked on 9/11/2001. I have proof of this that we really were attacked, go to NY city where 2 really really big buildings were and there is a big and i mean big hole in the ground, it is there. I think 2 airplanes ran into them and made them fall down. Oh wait President Bush caused that, I think he was on the phone with them giving them direction to the WTC just so he could start a war. You liberals are so clever to figure that out what would we do with out you. That was just wrong of Bush, just wrong. Oh sorry you probably wont like my answer. Someone should look into this guy Bush, thanks for clearing all this up for us Conservatives.

No, because our president reciently signed a bill that overrides a 'states protection from the Fedral Government', and allows him to send domestic troops (eg. National guard) anywhere without that states permission. Basically ordering our OWN TROOPS AGAINST US, to 'put-down' action like you talk about....Note-marshall law is coming...are you ready?

Everything is possible but they have to work very hard to convince the American people

With very good excuses to do so for the good of the country and you'll be very surprised

other wise it'll be a blood bath.

I suppose they could but I don't think it will ever happen. Maybe if Al Gore was to become president and he handed us over to the terrorists. But for now I don't see us in the same situation as those two countries.

now you see why our forefathers put in the clause

"THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS"

In case of a hostile Dictatorship ever getting control of our govt, the people will be able to revolt and get them out of there, A VERY IMPORTANT THING, that's why it is so important to Americans, NOT just to own guns. the first thing a hostile dictatorship does, is remove the weapons from the people, LIKE GERMANY did (Nazi's) in the 1930's.
