Someone who is placed on Social Security disability can apply for Medicare
2 years after becoming disabled.
They could apply for Medicaid and also Social Security Income
(if they are in a very low income bracket).
I would check with your local Social Security office where you live.
Medicare has to be obtained before having a transplant done, in order for
Medicare to pay for one...otherwise, his other insurance will have to cover it
for him. Medicare usually will pay up to 80% of the cost; If the transplant
was done at a Medicare approved Transplant Center. If the
Medicare plan pays for the transplant itself, then his anti
rejection drugs would be covered under part B of the Medicare plan.
If not, and the transplant was done under another insurance company,
say through his employer, then he may apply for Part D prescription
program (after obtaining Medicare) that will help cover the cost of this
anti-rejection drug prescription.
You can called the Transplant Center that is closest to you to see if
they are a Medicare approved Transplant Center.
To find a transplant center, you can call this phone number: calling (804) 782-4920.

Or type the name of the state where the transplant may be done and
"Transplant Center" after that, in your search engine and they may
bring them up. Many of the Transplant Centers have a website you can go
to, to learn more about them.
Best wishes. Hope this information is of some help to you.
