Why do people take so much pride in America.?

I have never been the type to scream. USA! USA! USA! (unless in the moment where we do something great) and post how america is superior to every other country. Personally I could care less but I do try to educate my self since its such a Sensative subject. Today my friend was so pissed about how protesters steped on the flag.
So I started a debate with him who knows alot more then I do just to see what argument he had. I asked him how can you take pride in a country that is not as great as you claim it to be.
A country that starts wars, one of the highest drug abuse, one of the highest prison rates, states that we are free but spies on it citzens every day, proof that the gov flooded drugs in out nehboirhoods, corropt gov., Lazy and greedy, ect.(Mostly negatives). To my suprise he had no responce just a temper tandrum about how I was stupid and ignorant. Now I know our country has done great things and there is similar and far more worse countrys but I just dont understand how you can take pride in something that is not so great. Its not that I hate the USA but help me understand where the American Pride comes from.

America strives to have a Better tomorrow. Sure, today and yesterday are full of foul ups. We're HUMAN>> We Error., BUT, this nation has done more good than foul. Nor is it content to remain frozen in culture and society. There are no cultural police to stone offenders for shaving off a beard, nor being a woman who (gasp) DROVE. We question ourselves. Like the gay stuff these days. We are questioning ourselves. Only America does that. With an eye on improving ALL our lots.

As of today its hard to say that i am proud of America to let all this nonsense go on in Baltimore .And our President not say one single word to stop this guess hes going to let his bfff Al Sharpton run his predisency on his last two years .I am so mad right now.

our drug laws and prison system has many flaws. Few civilized countries have the death penalty any more. Just too many "errors"

its normal almost everyone thinks their country is the best. what do you expect them to say? and besides if you really are being spied on, it wouldnt hurt to say something good about the GOV, i mean, what if they caught you saying this kind of stuff?
