Should convicted felons earn their freedom in Iraq?

Question

Is this a good idea to have judges letting criminal defendants serve in Iraq instead of going to jail?

If they are willing to serve, should we honor their service just as much as we would anyone else's and forgive their crimes when they return.

Roman slaves and criminals could were able to earn their freedom by serving as gladiators for a certain period of time.

Maybe the Army should keep it's high standards, and not allow violent felons to serve in the military. This approach would shut up those who believe the troops are in Iraq are there because they didn't do well in college. Allowing felons to serve in the military will give ammunition to those who wish to demean the troops.

The future of this country hinges on your answer to this question. What do you think?

hmm. i was in the army and in Iraq a couple of years ago. i knew people that had done minor crimes such as being caught with weed, shoplifting, etc. and the judge gave them a choice of jail or the army.

the soldiers i knew turned out to be some of the best ones i faught alongside of.....you are right though, it does make a person a little apprehensive, knowing that you joined for god and country, and this the guy beside you doesn't want to be there. in so many words,does he got your back? i have not heard of what you are saying here. i find it very hard to believe that our gov. would do this and i shall be checking on it further. if it is true then i shall write whoever i can.

I don't know maybe some who are not murderers, pedofiles or rapist. They should stay in prison or die on death row. I think that illegals from mexico should be offered the choice to serve in Iraq and stay in the U.S later or be deported like they should be. Maybe that would help. I think it would make them apriciate being an american and expedite their immigration. It would also offer them a chance to get more education, and learn english!

In principle, it would be nice. In practice, it is doubtful. The services do not need cannon fodder -- they need highly skilled people who can use and maintain today's complex weapons system. Such people require extensive training and need to be kept in service for long periods of time. Convicts have demonstrated a disability to follow rules and orders -- and that is the sine qua non of a military career.

I think they should earn their freedom by working to rebuild Iraq. Help build houses, serve food rations, aid families, and so on. That would be a Great help. Work-release.

It is definitely a bad idea to give criminals guns, train them to kill, then bring them back to be citizens after they have practiced there new skills in a foreign country.
